Abstract Text:The worldwide impact of the public/private WebCT/CIR partnership is the focus of this paper session. What started as a small pilot program several years ago to provide a continuing education experience to a couple dozen students in Latin America has expanded beyond El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua to include several additional clinics in Honduras and Colombia. The WebCT/CIR distance education program has caught the eye of other education providers in the region and as a result, the CIR has expanded its consortium partnerships to include the Center for National Rehabilitation (CNR) in Mexico. The CNR collaborates as both a development and delivery partner, helping the CIR realize its hub-and-spoke model for rehabilitation education programming in Latin and South America. In the Balkan region, the WebCT/CIR partnership has extended beyond the countries of Bosnia and Slovenia and now includes several new clinics in Serbia. The Balkan region education program has been recognized by the Ministry of Health in Bosnia, which has assigned a liaison for adaptation of the CIR’s associate-level curriculum as a standard for working prosthetists. In Afghanistan, a blended training program has been developed to deliver both synchronous and asynchronous modules on the assembly, fitting, repair and user issues associated with the CIR/WWI Wheelchair. In addition, Tanzania, Africa was the recent location for technology transfer associated with the dissemination efforts of the CIR Casting system, all facilitated by the communications tools and course delivery platform provided through the WebCT/CIR partnership. In this session we highlight the successes and challenges of our distance learning programming efforts, discuss the next steps for enterprise level e-learning platform development with WebCT Vista, and detail the demands and opportunities of a growing participation of international consortium members.
