E-15: Using Learning Styles to Achieve Accessible Course Design

Detailed Description:The terms “accessibility” and “compliance” tend to be perceived by many instructors as either negative or a barrier to going online. However, the phrase “learning styles” elicits more of a positive response because instructors can immediately understand how learning styles relate to improved teaching, especially online. Our showcase will focus on using the positive avenue of pedagogy over regulations to achieve a course design that employs sound practices and reaches the widest possible audience.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Enabling learning: Effective instructional practices and flexible design models
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors, K-12 Educational Staff
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:Presenters will offer a short (10 minute) slide show on learning styles and accessibility requirements. Following this presentation and using handouts, the presenters will engage the audience in identifying learning styles addressed by various course elements using several WebCT courses projected onscreen. Group work will build on these early activities to develop alternative presentations of material utilizing different learning styles.

The audience will then break into groups identified by a single learning style. All groups will be given the same five (5) course elements to address using their identified learning style, and will brainstorm alternative styles for the presentation of those course elements to improve the overall course design. Alternatives will be shared with the full group to help demonstrate that each learning style can be accommodated by innovative and engaging presentation approaches. Attendees will pinpoint various alternatives presented as improving a course’s accessibility and teaching potential. The audience and the presenters will then develop a plan for analyzing the learning styles used in any course, and identify which styles should be added to give all students access to content and/or participation.
