E-11: Partnering to deliver Native American cultural experiences beyond traditional bounds

Detailed Description:One of the many strengths of Montana is the rich and diverse cultural heritage of the state’s native population. Blackfeet Community College recognized that there are non-traditional audiences that can be served by both mainstream courses as well as opportunities to learn more about Blackfeet culture and society. By partnering with Montana State University, they are able to offer these educational opportunities while capitalizing on the experience and support of a larger institution.
Presentation Format:Panel
Topic:Partnering for success: Multi-institution and consortium challenges and solutions
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors, System Administrators, Senior Administrators, E-learning Managers
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:The administration and faculty of Blackfeet Community College, a small tribal college in northern Montana, decided to move forward with offering courses online. They were faced with a dilemma typical of small rural colleges - How to offer high quality online learning with the requisite faculty and student training and support, but with a limited budget and on-site technical resources.

Discussions were initiated with the staff of the Burns Telecom Center (BTC) at Montana State University – Bozeman, which is the central support resource for WebCT for the Montana State University system. The BTC has a long history of innovation in online learning, and has been providing faculty and student support on WebCT for over 3 years.

As co-stakeholders in the state’s land grant mission, BTC and BCC staff were very enthusiastic about forming a technology partnership that would allow Blackfeet Community College to offer online courses in mainstream academic areas, such as biology, sociology, and computer science. In addition, given the resurgence of interest in American Indian culture both nationally and internationally, there exists a tremendous opportunity to tell the Blackfeet cultural story to students and scholars near and far from Montana.

This session will highlight the planning, training, and support mechanisms that were developed and implemented to ensure the evolution of a successful online educational program which is designed and delivered by faculty at Blackfeet Community College. One of the most important aspects of this partnership is the need to have a dedicated and well trained distance education coordinator at the community college who will develop a broad understanding of an array of issues that confront faculty and administrators on an almost daily basis. The challenges of, and lessons learned from providing support for distance education coordination, registration, faculty, and students from a distant university campus will be described.
