M-5: Designing interactive graphic learning objects - the visual side of learning.

Detailed Description:Graphics on WebCT are often used only as pictures to break-up text heavy pages. Even when used to reinforce course information static graphics can be too complex. Campus One has developed a range of re-useable viewer formats such as multimedia players, slideshows, interactive games and even virtual environments, allowing students to view complex subjects as truly standalone visual learning objects. Campus One will show advantages in the use of such visual learning objects on WebCT.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Enabling learning: Effective instructional practices and flexible design models
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors, E-learning Managers
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:Graphics on WebCT in many courses are often used only as pretty pictures to break-up text heavy pages. Even when used to reinforce course information static graphics can be over complex and slow to download. This treatment of graphics is a missed learning opportunity to engage the student in a truly in-depth and interactive look at a subject within their online course.

Campus One has taken an innovative approach to the design of educational graphics by the development of a range of re-useable viewer formats such as multimedia players, slideshows, interactive games, 3d animation, virtual lecturers and even virtual environments, allowing students to view complex subjects as truly standalone visual learning objects.

The importance of reusability and the reuse of standards compliant content will be explored. The showcase will briefly cover QTI question formats and SCORM compliant content and will also explore the importance of designing experimental visual course content.

Campus One in its showcase will chart the development stages of designing a visual learning object, show a range of different treatments of visual learning objects and illustrate the many advantages in the use of such visual learning objects on WebCT leaving the audience excited and inspired.
