Abstract Text:Fairmont State College is using WebCT in three unique ways to augment the clinical aspect of our teacher education program. First, we have developed an online forum in WebCT in which over 150 of our student teachers communicate to share their student teaching experience. Fairmont State is located in a rural area and it is only through this forum that many or our student teachers are able to communicate with their supervising teachers and their peers who are going through the same experience.

Next, in its quest to provide candidates with exposure to diversity, the college partnered with the University of Puerto Rico to develop the Multicultural Student Teaching Forum. Students begin correspondence in the forum based on the following four topics: Knowing Each Other, Knowing the School, Knowing Your Classroom, How do we Compare and Contrast. Building on the success of this partnership the forum has grown to include student teachers from the University of Central Florida, Southeastern Louisiana University, etc.

Finally, in an effort to expand the partnership with our K12 Professional Development Schools (PDSs), the college devised a faculty development plan to train K12 supervising teachers and our student teachers to develop online lessons for K12 students using WebCT. Lessons are being created based on a Folklore curriculum that was developed as part of a Microsoft grant. The use of WebCT allows student teachers to share lessons and for students from the PDSs to correspond with each other.

All three projects have enriched our student teacher’s learning experience and have given them valuable skills for the future. This session will cover these partnership arrangements, highlight comments from the participants, and discuss future plans.
