I-7: Connected Learning: Integrating WebCT With Your SIS

Detailed Description:An integrated solution is invaluable for keeping WebCT in sync with your SIS. Implementation involves a series of complex process issues that involve departments including distance learning, registration, and various groups within IT, and organizations including WebCT, and your SIS vendor. This project proved more complex than it first appeared. Experience at Montgomery College will provide attendees with both the kinds of issues that come up, the people skills required, and institutional benefits.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Integrating the campus: Technical solutions and extended uses
Target Audience:System Administrators, Senior Administrators, E-learning Managers
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:Montgomery College recently integrated WebCT with our Student Information System (SCT’s Banner). This integration continues, as Campus Pipeline, the College’s portal being used as a single sign-on entry point, will soon include WebCT. During this session, the various departments and organizations that were included in the planning and implementation are identified and the issues arising are described in detail. Required process changes are identified and the negotiations to develop new processes are described. The College had been using WebCT for over a year before the integration was attempted and was offering about 75 courses. Login IDs, password and procedures, Banner coding, Term and department descriptions, populating courses with students, and building courses sites each had processes established when the integration was started. Each of these areas needed changes as we moved forward. To complicate the implementation, there is no window during the calendar year when there is a break in classes and other production processes. The challenge was to introduce the integration as seamlessly as possible without disrupting these ongoing activities. How the planning and cooperation needed to make this happen was accomplished, will be detailed. The people skills needed to bring contractors, vendors, and various departments across three campuses and off-site locations together to complete a successful integration at Montgomery College is a story that everyone can benefit from.
