Abstract Text: | At the University of Northern Iowa, WebCT is being used by Human Resources and the Graduate College in different and innovative ways to support the gathering and dissemination of information. This session will involve looking at the challenges and the unique solutions devised to improve and streamline University communications and services using WebCT. Faced with a potentially insuperable task of training all of UNI’s faculty and staff, the Human Resources department searched for a solution to answer when, where, and how to deliver effective training for the University. As part of the requirements of the training, Human Resources needed to be able to track, run reports, and disseminate information while providing a simple computer based interface that would basically “run” itself. After researching different methods of delivery, it was decided that WebCT would be the ideal solution. Examples will be given of the techniques used by Human Resources to accomplish a campus wide training initiative at UNI. As an innovative solution to solve paperwork bottlenecks, the UNI Graduate College began a pilot program using WebCT that allows students to electronically submit official forms and departments to share files, track approvals and finalize student program changes with the Registrar's Office. The new WebCT-managed Graduate Student Administration system has eliminated many of the problems associated with the procuring and routing of student forms. WebCT was chosen as the preferred software choice because it allows, over other survey tools and online forms options, the ability for students to initiate and track their progress in a highly convenient manner. In all, WebCT dramatically modernized and streamlined the administrative functions of UNI's Graduate College. By using WebCT in innovative ways, UNI has been able to support many different departments on campus to improve on communication and cut paperwork between themselves and their constituents. | ||
