Abstract Text:University Educational Technology Services (UETS) was created and defined by Georgia State University’s IT Strategic Plan in 1997. Under this plan, UETS was charged with building an instructional support program to assist university faculty and students in the use of online technologies. UETS took a proactive approach by creating the e-Learning Department. This department’s role was to support the use of WebCT and the design and development of the university’s WebCT courses. UETS has continued to take a proactive approach in order to enhance student learning by selecting and supporting pedagogically based services and learning tools in an integrated environment. UETS has built a team of professional instructional designers who assist faculty with the design and development of their hybrid or totally online courses. These professionals have advanced degrees in Instructional Technology and experience in both design and teaching. This has enriched the program since these individuals have backgrounds in communications, learning, instructional design and systems theories. UETS has initiated proposals and helped obtain tools such as Respondus and Turnitin to assist faculty in the development of their WebCT courses and to detect plagiarism. An eTraining program (Element K) was established so that students had access to over 450 online topics which can be used to enhance their academic experiences. Most recently a virtual classroom technology, Elluminate’s vClass, was added to the toolkit allowing faculty to conduct their classes, or students to attend their classes, from a variety of locations. With vClass they can access their WebCT course materials and share applications. The integration of these products is not yet complete but it is our goal to have faculty and students access all of these technologies from within WebCT. This presentation will discuss the evolution of the group and its services and its impact on the campus and University System.
