C-15: WebCT Explosion: Managing Enterprise-wide Growth for Distance Education

Detailed Description:In less than five years, Valencia Community College expanded its online course offerings from a handful of grassroots faculty efforts to nearly 500 fully-online and Web-enhanced courses facilitated through WebCT. The journey involved the integration of many technical components as well as the development of new social processes for faculty and staff. Join this roundtable discussion to explore methods and techniques to bring an enterprise-wide solution to your institution.
Presentation Format:Roundtable
Topic:Deploying enterprise e-learning: Strategies for success
Target Audience:System Administrators, Senior Administrators, E-learning Managers
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:Institutional development of online courses, and, subsequently, complete online programs requires the consideration and coordination of several key technological components and organizational areas in order to realize success. From the technical standpoint, institutional learning leaders and decision makers must take into account the hurdles inherent to the introduction of any new computing system, platform, or application on a scale wide enough to span multiple departments. Often, the integration of such system can cause much institutional “pain and suffering” before success is achieved. Additionally, the social structures in place at an institution will be a large factor in determining the ease or difficulty with which these systems are brought on-line; cross-departmental coordination and resource allocation/negotiation, issues of governance and soft-support, and even multi-campus issues must be adequately mapped, deconstructed, and considered.

Development of an enterprise-wide learning management system is a case in point. While no prescriptive format or sanctioned set of guidelines exists that could form the foundation of a universal learning management system rollout plan, there are several common institutional factors that may be analyzed and categorized. In identifying and determining these factors, individual institutions will be better prepared to manage the potential “explosive growth” of online and Web-enhanced courses that can result after the introduction of WebCT into an institution’s learning environment. The key to good growth is managed growth, and the institutional benefits to developing a strong enterprise-wide implementation strategy will far outlast the growing pains of implementation.
