B-5: Cross Cultural Flexible Learning: Impact of WebCT

Detailed Description:There is an increasing number of Western Universities offering flexible delivery programs through Asian institutions. Cultural differences and the dissimilarity between the Western and Asian approach to education introduces the need for even more flexibility. The University of Wollongong uses WebCT to support the delivery of courses in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. In this session we discuss solutions and methodologies we have implemented aimed at meeting cross-cultural needs and achieving desired educational outcomes.
Presentation Format:Panel
Topic:Driving student success: Attracting, supporting and retaining learners
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:The University of Wollongong uses WebCT to support the flexible delivery of courses in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. The differences in culture between the Western based UOW and the Asian based institutions have highlighted the need for an adaptable classroom management package. For the past six years, UOW has used WebCT to support its offshore deliveries and over that period of time, the size of the program has grown five fold. The growth in the capability of services provided by WebCT has facilitated the successful growth of the offshore program as well as providing the flexibility the various subjects on offer have required. This panel session will cover a full range of topics concerning flexible delivery in the cross cultural context.

Penney will discuss an overview of generic problems as evidenced over the last six years of UOW offshore delivery. Anne Nealon will discuss the practicalities of managing more than twenty WebCT sites over the course of an academic year, coupled with the problems of student database maintenance. Anne Fuller will describe the evolution of a single subject across four years of offshore presentation. Bob Corderoy will explain his role as WebCT manager for the University of Wollongong and the challenges therein. After these presentations a typical student session will be demonstrated using a current WebCT subject site. The audience will then be asked to participate in an open discussion of possible strategies for cross cultural delivery either in terms of a case study that will be presented or in terms of their own experience.
