H-11: Tips for the Novice WebCT Designer - What features should you be focusing on?

Detailed Description:When an instructor first enters into the world of WebCT, it is important that they initially select the tools that are easiest to learn and are also most valued by students. Focusing on the right "first features" results in a positive and rewarding initial experience for designers and students alike. A key component in ensuring that novice designers continue to use WebCT and have the impetus to explore some of the more advanced features.
Presentation Format:Roundtable
Topic:Empowering educators: Professional development models and methods
Target Audience:Faculty and Other Instructors, System Administrators, E-learning Managers
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT
Abstract Text:WebCT can be difficult to learn and the seemingly complicated interface can turn off even the most motivated novice instructor (Widmayer, 2000). It is in my view that WebCT provides an excellent spring board from which an instructor can launch technology integrated teaching, but expectations on the initial use of the software should be realistic as well as pedagogically sound. I propose that by focusing on specific features such as uploading course documentation (e.g. syllabus), providing links for appropriate websites and using the calendar are relatively easy for a novice to learn, and are, most importantly, engaging for students as well. As a result, instructors will become more enthused about technology integration and students will benefit by having integrated technology training at the core of their learning.
