F-6: Managing Large Enrolment Courses in WebCT

Detailed Description:The administration at the author's institution is interested in finding the potential of teaching large enrolment courses online. In response to the encouragement of the administration, some faculty members are actively engaged in developing courses that have large enrollment. The paper thus reviews some of the challenges and opportunities in teaching large classes through technology and discusses the practical concerns raised by the faculty members in managing such a course in WebCT 4.1.
Presentation Format:Paper
Topic:Enabling learning: Effective instructional practices and flexible design models
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors, Senior Administrators
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:One of the challenges that most of the higher education institutions are facing today is the pressure of increasing enrollments. This is also one of the most significant issues at the author's campus and administration is keen to find ways and means that could help in addressing the problem. The use of web for teaching large enrollment courses is therefore being encouraged at the campus. The paper begins by discussing the current practice of translating conventional teaching strategies to web-based teaching. It then reviews the emerging trends of building courses based on student-centered learning and innovative teaching concepts such as immersive learning environments. Apart from the effectiveness of learning, the practical considerations of managing large enrollment courses are important in choosing various teaching techniques. The paper highlights the benefits and obstacles in implementing various teaching strategies and how effective these can be for learning and course management. Some faculty members at our campus are actively engaged in developing courses to be conducted within WebCT with a large enrollment. They identified a number of issues, specific to their scenarios, in managing the course within WebCT. The paper also presents some of the capabilities that the course developers wish to have in WebCT for their large enrollment courses, and reviews some of the workarounds, which currently can be used.
