F-5: Hybrid Community College Biology: WebCT and Campus-based Instruction
Detailed Description: | This is an original study of a hybrid WebCT biology course where internet-enhanced modes of instruction replaced conventional face-to-face (F2F) lecture materials, merging with collaborative on-campus instruction. The demographics and standardized test results of a hybrid cohort were compared with two on-campus cohorts, all taught by the same teacher. The hybrid and one on-campus group used online quizzes and tests; the third used paper-and-pencil tests.
Presentation Format: | Paper
Topic: | Measuring outcomes: Student achievement and course success
Target Audience: | Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors, System Administrators, Senior Administrators, E-learning Managers
Appropriate Audience Level: | Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text: | This is possibly the first study of a hybrid WebCT biology course where internet-enhanced modes of instruction replaced conventional face-to-face (F2F) lecture materials, merging with collaborative inquiry-based on-campus laboratory instructional modes. Although not a true experiment, the design of this study included three independent cohorts taught by the same teacher, a pretest and three posttests. One F2F cohort used written test materials and the other used WebCT-delivered materials to examine possible differences in groups using electronic assessment modes. The results were significantly different in participants’ self-selection into the hybrid course, prior online experiences, computer self-efficacy, achievement and persistence. Participants will use practice quiz materials and the WebCT site.
