K-11: The Online Academy: The Evolution Of A Faculty Training Program

Detailed Description:Harrisburg Area Community College started offering online classes in the spring of 1999. The College recognized early on that the differences in on-campus and online pedagogy would require special training for faculty to ensure their success in this new learning environment. Harrisburg Area Community College developed the Online Academy to provide this training. We will look at how the Online Academy has evolved and where we see it going.

Abstract Text:HACC first investigated the possibility of offering online courses in the fall of 1997 through the formation of the Internet Task Force. Online classes were first officially offered during the spring 1999 semester. Following that semester, feedback from both faculty and students suggested that appropriate training be provided for prospective online faculty. The planning and development for the first Online Academy took place during the fall 1999 semester based on this feedback. It was also determined that the trainers for the Online Academy would be drawn from many constituent areas of the College to utilize their expertise. The importance of this training was recognized and the training was made mandatory for all prospective online faculty. The first cohort of twelve faculty participated in the Online Academy during the Spring 2000 semester. Since then, the Online Academy has been offered nine times, training a total of 95 faculty. By constantly evaluating and acting on feedback provided by each successive cohort, the Online Academy has evolved considerably from the initial offering in both content and presentation. The feedback process consists of evaluations of each of the twelve 2-hour sessions being offered and the Online Academy as a whole. Modifications are made to existing topics and new topics are added with each successive offering. The Online Academy has been very successful in preparing our faculty for teaching online. This success is measured by the success of our online students and the continued growth of online courses at HACC. We expect to see the Online Academy evolving as we continue to evaluate feedback from faculty, to place more content online, and to utilize new technologies to improve the learning experiences of our online faculty.
