Abstract Text:This presentation will describe and give you a tour of the process for recognizing Exemplary Online Instruction. It will make the Rubric for Online Instruction available for you to use or adopt for your own program. It will talk about how Chico developed this program and is supporting faculty at their state university. Chico State is a WebCT Institute.

It is possible for faculty to receive recognition for exemplary online instruction. CSU, Chico has a program in place that awards faculty for their excellence in online teaching. An annual call for nominations is placed in winter. A committee reviews courses submitted in spring. Dialogue takes place between online instructors, peers and administrators. An evaluation process is used with the Rubric for Online Instruction looking at its six categories. Criteria are evaluated to a baseline, effective or exemplary rating. Courses achieving ratings of exemplary are announced publicly at an annual conference, where certificates are awarded, by the Provost. Instructors are recognized by deans and department chairs as well as their peers at an awards luncheon where posters depicting their courses are displayed. There is a web site that displays these posters as well as describing the courses and the Rubric for Online Instruction. It is critical to demonstrate and share the examples to faculty wanting to design new courses or revise existing courses. There is a peer-mentoring process in place for award-winners to help mentor the next group of nominees.
