L-7: Implementing Educationally Sound Games Using the Respondus© Standard Format

Detailed Description:Learning through play has been a prominent theme of e-learning for the past few years, but using games to meet educational outcomes has eluded many educators. In this showcase, learn how we have developed gaming designed for multiple intelligences and mapped to Bloom’s Taxonomy. Course designers and instructors who are interested in learning how they can quickly and easily implement games using their existing material and the Respondus© Standard Format should attend.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Enabling learning: Effective instructional practices and flexible design models
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors, K-12 Educational Staff
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:This presentation introduces attendees to our online interface which helps course designers and instructors of all age groups implement educationally sound games into their online courses by converting the Respondus files they are already using to create multiple choice quizzes in WebCT.

After a brief history of Multiple Intelligences and Bloom's Taxonomy attendees will be shown why it is important to take those principles into consideration when creating and implementing games. Participants are then introduced to our interface. Attendees will first be shown a sampling of the games that are available to them. Each of the games were designed by Instructional Designers with sound pedagogy at its foundation. Participants will learn that our interface allows users to simply cut and paste the contents of a file containing WebCT quiz questions in the Respondus Standard Format into it. It then creates a compressed .zip folder which contains all of the information needed to play our games using their questions.

During a large group game participants will play along as we have fun reviewing the contents of our presentation.

A question and answer period will allow attendees to further interact with the presenters.

Before the end of the session the presenters will hold a door prize style drawing for various promotional items.

After attending this session attendees will be able to identify an educationally sound game. Further more they will be able to use our interface to create and implement our online games using their own questions. It is also expected that ideas for further game development will be generated by session participants thus fostering a wider interest in educational gamming.

It is the recommendation of the presenters that a standard be established for educational gaming so that interfaces such as ours can easily be integrated for use with other games.
