J-8: Fast and Effective Training: The Scenario Based Approach

Detailed Description:With busy schedules, limited resources, and a tight schedule, training faculty to use WebCT can be very challenging. Using a scenario-based training program, Weber State University has shortened actual training time, and moved much of their material online to accommodate busy schedules and allow for limited resources. We feel our method is quicker and more effective than the traditional ‘week-long training’.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Empowering educators: Professional development models and methods
Target Audience:E-learning Managers
Appropriate Audience Level:Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:

Abstract –

  • Content - The presentation will include a brief description of the theory behind a scenario-based approach, an outline of our training program, a presentation on the process of developing the training, and a demonstration of the online material and tutorials.
  • Objectives - The objective of the presentation is to briefly explore the theories, and demonstrate the usefulness of scenarios in instruction, and specifically how those theories have been applied in developing faculty training for WebCT Vista.
  • Scope - We will not look exhaustively at the theory, nor will it simply be a show and tell of what Weber State has done.  The scope of the presentation will focus briefly on theory, how that theory can be applied in instruction, and specifically how our training has benefited from the application of these theories.
  • Methods – The methods we have employed in our training is to develop a series of scenarios or problems that a student, an instructor, or a designer may face while using WebCT Vista.  Using demonstration, scaffolding, and guided practice, our faculty members get a better understanding of how to use Vista holistically, rather than piece by piece.
  • Conclusions – We have concluded that the understanding of the faculty has not suffered in spite of the shortened time spent in class.  We are still compiling results and will have more information at the time of the conference.
  • Recommendations – We recommend that scenarios be integrated into the training process for WebCT users.  We feel strongly that learners are more prepared to use WebCT Vista after completing our course.
