Abstract Text:Deakin University’s Online Teaching & Learning Fellowship Program was introduced in 2003 to provide the opportunity for Faculty to enhance their knowledge and skills in online teaching and learning, in particular the use of WebCT Vista.

The program’s specific objectives were to: • recognise, support and develop Deakin University’s existing expertise in online teaching and learning; • provide an opportunity for Faculty to actively engage in the development of online teaching and learning environments; • provide advanced professional development in the design, implementation and maintenance of exemplary online teaching and learning practice; • encourage peer-based professional development through skill-sharing and mentoring; and • support the implementation of WebCT Vista within the teaching programs of the University.

The specified outcomes of the program were that each Fellow would engage in professional development and curriculum development activities related to online teaching and learning using WebCT Vista and, at the end of their fellowship, provide a case study or exemplar of their work. Each Fellow was also expected to participate in formal and informal training and professional development activities in their respective faculty.

This session will outline the background for this program in relation to facilitating the implementation of WebCT Vista at Deakin, the activities undertaken by participants and the outcomes of the program. Examples of case studies will be presented to demonstrate the wider benefits of the program and to generate discussion on how this model of professional development can be used at other institutions.
