E-5: Catch the Wave: Experience an Online Course

Detailed Description:This session allows participants to peer into an online course that has been designed to give Web-based instructors a student learning experience. The course contains modules about the importance of community in the online environment, instructional design principles, content for the online environment, use of communications tools such as email, chat, discussion forum, and student presentations, and the improvement of accessibility through alternative text.

Abstract Text:Many instructors who plan to develop online courses have never actually been an online student. Participants will examine an online course designed to provide prospective Web-based faculty the opportunity to become students in an online course. They will view the course modules: building community in the online environment; instructional design principles; developing content for the online environment; communications tools such as email, chat, discussion forum, and student presentations; copyright; accessibility; and library services. They will also see the course design for further interaction through assigned articles and responses to a discussion board, quizzes, chat and, a presentation in WebCT Student Presentations.
