L-3: Changing Horses in Midstream

Detailed Description:How difficult is it really to switch from one course management system to another? In January of 2002, Colorado Community Colleges Online made the decision to move nearly 350 course sections, 175 instructors, and several thousand students from eCollege to WebCT Campus Edition. In the process we learned a lot about servers, software, training and personalities. In this presentation we'll talk about what we learned and why we made the decisions we made.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Changing mindsets: Strategies for institutional change
Target Audience:System Administrators, Senior Administrators, E-learning Managers
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:The selection of a course management system impacts every aspect of a school’s distance learning program. Once the choice is made it sometimes appears to be immutable. However, there are several advantages to reviewing that choice every few years. CCCOnline went through an assessment of the various choices in course management systems 2 ˝ years ago, and came to the conclusion that it was time to make a change. In this presentation we will first discuss our decision making process, what we considered and what we should have considered but did not. Next, we will discuss the project itself - each step involved in changing course management systems, and all of the “mini-projects” required to change course management systems.

CCCOnline also made the decision to host our own courses, an aspect of running an online program that was not an option prior to changing CMS. This presentation will touch briefly on the choices we made around hosting and the results of those decisions.

Finally, we will talk about why changing CMS's has been a good experience for CCCOnline in terms of course quality and faculty development.
