Abstract Text:Through interactive demonstration, handouts and discussion, presenters will describe the application of WebCT tools to the design of an intensive field-based learning theories course in an undergraduate teacher preparation program. The design, which exemplifies creative collaboration between an Instructional Designer and a Teacher Education faculty member, employs a variety of WebCT tools to enable student interaction with one another, the professor, the field site coordinator and the course content. Ongoing communication in this dynamic e-environment supports integration of fieldwork, reading and classwork, providing a safe, structured context outside of the confines of live classroom meetings for the sharing of observations, reflections, feedback, questions and artifacts, and for the co-creation of products and presentations. Because the course requires independent and collaborative acquisition and application of discrete knowledge and skills, exploration and development of positive dispositions, analysis and reflection related to experiences and artifacts, and authentic assessment and documentation of learning, the full range of WebCT tools are utilized. This robust design serves as a model for WebCT implementation in other courses while empowering students and observers to be active thinkers and effective users of appropriate technology in their own future classrooms. A course design overview, key assignment descriptions, and details related to the application of WebCT tools will be presented in handouts, discussion and visuals during the session, along with a web-linked exploration of actual course elements. Presenters will outline a possible data collection plan, identify organizational, technical and other challenges and obstacles encountered, and will solicit questions, feedback and possible adaptations or alternate application of the design from participants. Electronic communication will be encouraged after the session.
