Abstract Text:Academic integrity is an increasing concern in higher education. Whether plagiarism, cheating on examinations or other violations are on the rise is not yet determined. However, if the concerns of faculty and the existence of new commercial industries to aid in violation detection provide evidence, then today’s campuses face a real challenge. There are several reasons for the rising concern of academic dishonesty – several of which turn to the Internet and increasing accessibility of mobile computing in wireless devices, handhelds and mobile phones. To attend to these concerns a faculty member designing a course in WebCT has various options to them. First and foremost is directing students to the institutional and departmental academic honesty policies. Equally, informing students of the processes involved in violations of such policies is also warranted. But more importantly is the opportunity for educating students on the ethical value and awareness of what entails academic integrity. Lastly, through the use of various WebCT tools, including but not limited to self-tests, quizzes, surveys, assignments and selective release, designers have the opportunity to deter violations as well as educate students. It is to this end that the showcase will demonstrate possible techniques to reduce cheating in online quizzes, releasing of content based on acceptance to honor pledges and other scenarios.
