This presentation is part of C-7: Interactivity in your Online Course

Adding Live Interactive eLearning to WebCT

Description:Add live interactive eLearning to your WebCT courses with Macromedia's Flash Communications Server. Four real-time applications will be shown: a Virtual Office with live video conferencing, a video Talk Show that supports hundreds of viewers; a video Bulletin Board for students to post video comments; and live application sharing for tutoring or training. Students use Flash as the client so all browsers and operating systems are supported. Free code samples will be available on CD-ROM.
Presentation Format:Oral
Topic:Enabling learning: Effective instructional practices and flexible design models
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors, Senior Administrators, E-learning Managers, K-12 Educational Staff
Appropriate Audience Level:Experienced WebCT users

Abstract Text:Four real-time communications applications used by Miami-Dade College’s distance learning program will be demonstrated: a Virtual Office with live video conferencing; a real-time video Talk Show that supports hundreds of viewers; a video Bulletin Board for students to post video comments and opinions; and live application sharing for tutoring or training. In addition to being able to broadcast real-time learning events, these applications can easily save the broadcasts for on-demand replay.

The applications use Macromedia’s Flash Communication Server and will be demonstrated inside a WebCT 4.0 course. Any video source can be used (web cam, digital video, even a VCR) without the need for encoders, support technicians, complicated setups or scheduling.

Distribution of content to students has been nearly fool-proof because all students need is a browser (IE, Netscape, Opera) and the Flash Player (already installed on 98% of all computers). The stream degrades easily to accommodate dial-up users.

Adding synchronous communication tools to WebCT courses (with the ability to easily archive the events for replay) opens up exciting new possibilities for both eLearning and training.

In addition to providing rich media content for WebCT courses, Miami-Dade College is excited about these applications because they are cost-effective (licensing is about $1 per active connection, with no additional annual costs), require very little faculty training, and require no additional student training or support.

Miami-Dade College has deployed these applications as sharable learning objects that are managed within a custom portal that also manages WebCT courses and student access.

The presentation runs approximately 30 minutes with additional time provided for discussions on deployment, security, training, and student acceptance. Two hundred CD-ROMs will be provided with code samples, security procedures, and installation tips.
