Abstract Text: | Creating a sense of belonging and camaraderie can be a challenge in any classroom. Fostering a sense of community in the virtual classroom can prove to be a greater challenge still. Through the creative use of various WebCT tools students can engage in a series of interesting tasks that allow them to feel connected to their classmates and instructor despite the fact that they never meet. Tools which promote active learning and direct participation can be of more interest to the student hence encouraging them to participate at a higher level in the course. Several examples of such innovative tool usage are worth noting. The Discussion tool can be used to allow students to monitor their own Help Desk and participate in small group activities like “Diversity Bingo”. The survey tool has creative applications when used as a verification mechanism of a course contract or as a forum for student critiques. Traditional web pages can become non-traditional when a variety of topics are assigned and classmates are encouraged to interact with the page’s creator. Using WebCT tools in creative ways that promote active learning serves several purposes. Students engage in a variety of tasks that allow them to share themselves while learning more about their classmates. Students who feel connected to classmates and the instructor may feel more enthusiastic about course participation with an end result of improved performance in the class. Another positive result may be the contribution to increased retention in courses utilizing these innovative tools. It is supposed that using creativity in course exercises enhances the overall experience of the distance learning student and may contribute to his participating in another course delivered using this method of delivery. |
