Implementation and Management of WebCT Vista at Deakin – a collaborative approach

Description:The implementation of WebCT Vista at Deakin took a collaborative approach, including representation from faculty, learning services, the information technology services division (ITSD), other support areas and students. This session will investigate the collaborative approach taken in order to migrate content and develop staff and support resources, which relied on the development of interfaces with other Deakin systems, and regular communication with Systems staff in ITSD and WebCT support staff.

Abstract Text:Deakin University selected WebCT Vista in 2001 after a very successful, consultative approach to the selection process. Following this success, the implementation of WebCT Vista university-wide also took a collaborative approach.

The implementation project included a number of ‘streams’ of activity (technical, migration, training, support, communication, administration etc.) each of which included appropriate representation from Faculty, Learning Services (LS; the central support unit for teaching and learning), the Information Technology Services Division (ITSD), other support areas (e.g. student support), and students.

The primary example that will be used to stimulate discussion will be the collaboration around migration of content, staff development, and development of support resources. These areas, although originally scoped to be managed separately, naturally came together. Members of this group were also represented in the Administration ‘stream’, which was defining the integrations required with our SIS and staff database. The group also relied heavily on regular communication with Systems staff in ITSD and with WebCT support staff.

As Deakin moves to mainstream the implementation of WebCT Vista, the issues may be change but the approach will continue for ongoing management of WebCT Vista with the intention of fostering communication across the University. The group will be focusing on sharing information about and collaborating on solutions for staff support, staff development for WebCT Vista, WebCT Vista evaluation, WebCT Vista bugs and issues (and workarounds), WebCT Vista administration, and teaching and learning issues.
