Abstract Text:In the Fall of 2002, the idea of a course management system came into the forefront among the faculty and key staff at LaSalle University. After careful deliberation with several key administrators, the decision was made to purchase WebCT 3.8 campus edition. The installation process started in the Spring of 2003 and most of that semester was spent preparing and learning the system from several viewpoints: as a system administrator, course designer and as a student. A great deal of time was also spent developing a training curriculum, schedules and training materials. Our hope was to have 25 courses developed in a hybrid format for the Fall 2003 semester.

By the beginning of the Fall semester, there were over 150 courses that were using WebCT as a component and over 75 designers. Our presentation will focus on how we handled the number of courses, designers and students and how we assessed the success of that first semester. We will also talk about the results of the assessment, and the measures we have taken to not only ensure that the faculty get continuous support but also that the students aren’t subjected to poor courses, both in the design of the course and the use of the course tools. We will also talk about some of the technological issues that arose because of the simultaneous integration of the Luminis portal system during the same time frame. We will highlight the integration and instructional uses of other systems on campus, namely Banner and iNotes, our campus e-mail system, and interesting uses for WebCT. We will also talk about our strategy for upgrading to 4.0 and fully implementing WebCT with the other university systems.
