Abstract Text:This session explores the challenges experienced, as well as the strategies used, by the University of New Mexico degree programs attempting to orient students to web and WebCT skills necessary to be successful in their online courses. Other approaches to orientation had left competent students irritated with the waste of their time, and other students who needed in depth training, shorthanded and often frustrated.

The Skills Assessment Course in WebCT allows all students to move at their own pace, assessing their skill level in required areas. Then students use the resources included in the course to gain the experience and any knowledge they were lacking. The bonus is all students learn to use the tools in WebCT in an authentic approach resulting in practice using web based materials in order to complete the assessment. These students then enter their actual academic courses as experienced WebCT users.

The faculty was pleased by the reduction in students' technical learning curve and time needed to be spent in support of new users. The WebCT based Skills Assessment remained available to students as a resource throughout the semester. The continued availability of the course became an especially important factor as the semester progressed and students needed to revisit the modules regarding library research and applying APA formatting to their written assignments.

The presenters will demonstrate the course in both Campus Edition and Vista. Reactions by students and faculty through evaluations will be also be featured. Participants will receive materials including the Skills Assessment on CD.
