Abstract Text: | In Fall 2005, the University of Alberta brought in a WebCT Solutions Architect to help analyze our course, template, and enrollment work flows. We wanted to streamline many of the manual procedures into more automated processes and needed to be adaptable to change from all sources of data. In our analysis of our external student information sources, centralized computing accounts, current faculty teaching practices, and the 3+ years of existing WebCT Vista data, we realized that a generic solution to automate our manual processes would not be possible. A more flexible solution needed to be found that would allow us to separate code modules responsible for data access from modules responsible for implementing business logic (such as loading student enrollment information in a WebCT section). In this way, we could handle a change in data access (like moving from an xml based data delivery to a database) without impacting the business logic that carries out an automated task. This session will cover our experiences, implementation so far, and how our strategies can help other institutions build solutions while coping with changes along the way. | ||
