C-3: Best Practices in Asynchronous Discussion Design: Synthesis of Recent Research
Detailed Description:Conferencing technologies in asynchronous online learning environments continue to offer a significant opportunity for students to engage in collaborative critical reflection, an important source of formative assessment in online higher education. As a standard element of online learning, there is a continuing need to identify a systematic and reliable approach to the design of asynchronous online conferencing areas. Drawing on recently published literature, this presentation will synthesize research and discuss potential best practices.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Researching online learning: Presentations of published papers on e-learning and WebCT
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors

Abstract Text:Conferencing technologies in asynchronous online learning environments continue to offer a significant opportunity for students to engage in collaborative critical reflection, an important source of formative assessment in online higher education. As a standard element of online learning, there is a continuing need to identify a systematic and reliable approach to the design of asynchronous online conferencing areas. Drawing on recently published literature, this presentation will synthesize the research and develop potential best practices in asynchronous discussion design. Examining various design models, this presentation will give attendees multiple design methods for online courses and discuss implications and directions for further research.
