L-2: Blending Emerging Technologies in Online Courses – The Next DC-3
Detailed Description:This session explores what combination of emerging technologies will enable “The Next Big Thing” in education technology. Learn how UCF supports faculty when integrating new technologies and explore how to design a scalable faculty support model that allows for innovation in online teaching and learning. The presenters will encourage an open discussion regarding emerging technologies, as well as the possibilities and appropriateness of their use in higher education. Join UCF to discuss emerging technology combinations that have “wings to fly.”
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Incorporating innovative tools: breakthrough technologies and WebCT
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors, K-12 Educational Staff
Appropriate Audience Level:Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:When the early conquistadors came to the Americas, they heard of a fabled city called “El Dorado.” This city was described to them as a “city of gold.” The conquistadors searched for this city, but what they finally came to realize was that the “city of gold” was merely mud huts gleaming golden in the sunset. Similarly, many of us in higher education hear about a new technology and assume it will be our “city of gold” by improving student learning and making it easier for faculty to teach. What often occurs, however, is we realize this technology has limited value and we toss it aside as the conquistadors did with their mud huts.

In his book the “Fifth Discipline,” Peter Senge references the creation of the DC-3 airplane as an example of existing innovations being combined in such a way as to enable “The Next Big Thing.” The DC-3 enabled modern commercial air travel by combining five existing innovations of the day. Similarly, we in higher education should not be looking for which emerging technology will be “The Next Big Thing,” rather we should look at what combination of emerging technologies will enable “The Next Big Thing” in education technology.
