L-7: Mixing the Physical and the Virtual: Implementing Blended Pedagogy
Detailed Description:Purdue University and the University of Western Ontario have deployed the eInstruction proxy tool to integrate physical classroom response with online learning. Come learn more about being an early adopter of integrated learning technologies in this interactive session.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Integrating the campus: Technical solutions and extended uses
Target Audience:System Administrators, E-learning Managers
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:Both Purdue University and the University of Western Ontario have adopted CPS Online's response tools for use in the physical classroom. In addition, the schools have also implemented the Vista Learning Management System. To overcome challenges associated with registration and administration of the response tools, we have pursued and obtained an integration with WebCT Vista.

Since the Learning Management System could serve as a source of student data (in terms of the users as well as the learning events they were a member of), integration with Vista simplified and automated the way that both instructors and students interacted with the CPS systems. It has been our experience that this may serve as a model for how to handle other tool integrations as well, since the effort has already been spent to integrate Vista with student systems.

Furthermore, working closely with the vendor has given us a chance to offer suggestions and guidance as the integration progressed. This has led to a cleaner integration that will meet end user needs and expectations.

Finally, we have been able to offer our experiences in working with the Vista system. In many cases the functionality concept (such as utilizing the Vista grade book API) has already been explored and implemented at the customer school. In such cases, we had ready examples that could provide a head start to a vendor who planned to pursue a similar integration.
