K-4: Developing a Library Resource Tool in WebCT Vista
Detailed Description:This session will showcase a Library Research Tool (LRT) for delivering electronic library materials to students enrolled in WebCT Vista course sections. The publishing tool runs automatically on a local machine, searches for unpublished files, and then uploads them to designated target folders in the file server. The retrieving tool is an outbound authentication component invoked from the WebCT Vista course menu. Learn how the LRT was implemented and hear suggestions for developing an LRT for your institution.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Integrating the campus: Technical solutions and extended uses
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors, System Administrators, Senior Administrators, E-learning Managers
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:This workshop address development of a "Library Resource Tool" (LRT) to deliver electronic library materials to students in individual Vista class sections and throughout the Vista learning context hierarchy. Per instructors' request, the University of Connecticut library prepares electronic course resource files and publishes them to corresponding WebCT courses or sections so students can use these resources after logging in successfully. We will discuss development and implementation of components of the LRT including: File server (Java web application) Synchronization Tool (Java application) Publishing Tool (Java application) File viewer (Outbound Authentication Component) Specifically we will cover: a.) deployment of a file server, a separate Java web application that runs parallel to the vista instance and hosts all library resource files. b) development of a synchronization tool that retrieves WebCT learning context to create, modify and delete folder structures in the file server. c) the libraries role of dropping new resource files into a local folder and updating a file-course mapping database. d) development of a batch publishing tool that searches the drop-box folder for unpublished files. The LRT then uploads files to the mapped folder on the file server. e) deployment of an outbound authentication component for viewing where, after logging in successfully, a user sees a button for library resources on the course menu. By clicking the LRT link, the user sees a list of titles with links in a pop up window. We will discuss the dynamics of implementing the LRT and suggest recommendations for successful LRT implementation.
