F-2: A Learner-Centered, Multi-Chromatic Approach
Detailed Description:The University of Johannesburg uses a multimodal educational strategy where different modes of delivery are used in an integrated manner to enhance learning and teaching and make content more accessible. Implementing this learner-centered approach helps to guide students’ learning, create more diverse learning opportunities for students, accommodate more learning styles, actively engage students during the learning process, and promote different methods of assessment. Learn about this “multi-chromatic” model and how it may benefit students and staff at your institution.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Deploying enterprise e-learning: Strategies for success

Abstract Text:The University of Johannesburg was formed on 1 January 2005 through the merger of the then academically focused Rand Afrikaans University (RAU) and the then career focused Technikon Witwatersrand. The new University offers academic as well as career focused programmes. The Senate of the then RAU approved an integrated multimodal learning and teaching strategy in May 2002. Following that, a Centre was formed at the University to roll out this strategy. This Centre has the brief to design and develop the learning material needed for this and the support for lecturers and students and the administration of the WebCT system(s) used.

This strategy determines that different modes of delivery, including educational technologies, are to be used in an integrated manner to enhance learning and teaching and make the content of programmes more accessible. The advantages of implementing this learning centred approach are as follows: • It promotes the guiding of students' learning. • It enhances the contact education offered by the University. • It creates more, and more diverse, learning opportunities for students. • It accommodates more learning styles. • It engages students more actively during learning events. • It provides flexible communication opportunities for students. • It promotes different assessment opportunities.

This monochromatic strategy served well for the monofocused University (RAU) operating on a single campus until the end of 2003. In comparison to then, our Centre is now offering its services to a University which has five campuses with different levels of infrastructure, almost double the number of full-time academic staff and students both of which are growing in diversity in a “comprehensive” University.

The colouring involved in changing from our former monochromatic to our present multi-chromatic approach includes moving from WebCT CE to WebCT Vista. These and other colourful changes will be painted in the presentation.
