A-8: Lessons Learned: Helping faculty transition from CE to VISTA 4
Detailed Description:The University of Nevada, Las Vegas began the transition into VISTA 4 from Campus Edition 4.1 by piloting courses in the School of Dental Medicine, the Hank Greenspun School of Journalism & Media Studies, and the Department of Sociology. During the pilot period, the Center also learned how to develop better faculty training and support.

Abstract Text:This purpose of this roundtable is to generate an exchange of good practices in faculty training for using VISTA 4 and for developing ongoing faculty support for the continued use of VISTA 4. The issues addressed and shared in this roundtable are the practices that the Teaching and Learning Center (the university's faculty development center) developed during the Spring 2006 pilot semester. In planning for the VISTA 4 training, the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) had scant access to any VISTA 4 practices to draw upon from other universities. The TLC had to develop its own goals, schedule and strategies for faculty workshops. The TLC began by conducting a faculty survey based on their Campus Edition experience to determine what course management tools faculty perceived to be most useful. The TLC used this survey as a factor for shaping the semester's training workshops. The focus of the workshops was guided by the underlying mission of the TLC to serves the entire UNLV Teaching Community by taking a holistic approach to faculty and graduate life.

The TLC staff recognized that the training had to address faculty who had already used WebCT Campus Edition as well as faculty who were totally new to using any WebCT product. There fore the Center created two workshop types, a three part Basic Series for faculty new to WebCT and a 90 minute Fundamentals session for WebCT experienced faculty that provided an overview of VISTA 4 and compared it to Campus Edition 4.1.

Although the university had purchased training materials from WebCT, the materials all made reference to Campus Edition 6 rather than VISTA 4. In addition, the graphics in the WebCT training materials did not reflect the university customized interface or permissions.

The outcomes of the TLC's learning process will be shared with roundtable attendees.
