Abstract Text:The Professional Development in E-learning Program (PDEP) is an online course for faculty developers who wish to provide professional development in e-learning for faculty within their institutions. The program is based around the Online Learning and Teaching Program (OLTP), which has been delivered at Massey University since 2004 (completely online in 2005). The OLTP supports faculty (both academic and support) moving into the online teaching environment. Best practice and technical training in the use of WebCT are blended together to enable faculty to develop and support Web-enabled papers.

An indirect route into the PDEP is provided for faculty developers who either have limited e-learning knowledge, or who have not experienced online learning as a student. These faculty developers complete the first two courses – Introduction to E-learning and Communication – in the OLTP before commencing the PDEP.

Topics covered in the PDEP include professional development strategies, application of e-learning guidelines, and design and development of learning resources.

In conclusion, we have found that institutions wishing to increase their e-learning capability require professional development for faculty developers, and this can be provided online via the Professional Development in E-learning Program.
