A-5: Designing effective training for CE users moving to Vista.
Detailed Description:This session will discuss how and why we adapted our training and support program to better serve the needs of our long time WebCT CE users moving to WebCT Vista. We will profile these unique transition users and identify key differences from new users. We will also describe our multi-faceted training and support program and demonstrate different types of materials we provide for our faculty members.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Deploying enterprise e-learning: Strategies for success
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors, System Administrators, Senior Administrators, E-learning Managers
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:After a rigorous selection process, McGill University (a long time user of WebCT CE since version 1.3 with over 1000 instructors and 3000 courses) selected WebCT Vista for our new LMS. Upon selecting WebCT Vista we immediately recognized that faculty members that were experienced with WebCT CE would have difficulty making the transition to a new system, despite the fact that it was still WebCT. Over one academic year, we needed to transition over 1000 faculty from WebCT CE to WebCT Vista. In response to their needs, we designed an effective training and support program of great breadth and depth (to account for novice and expert CE users) while accounting for scalability to cover the entire university.

This proved to be one of the most challenging aspects of our WebCT Vista implementation. Concepts that were simple and intuitive in WebCT Vista for new users were extremely difficult for transition users to manage. Most of the information we discovered from other institutions didn't make a distinction between new and transitional users. We designed a multi-faceted training and consultation program that was effective for both new faculty using Vista as well as the faculty making the transition from CE.

This session will draw a profile of a typical transition user and their instructional needs based on focus groups, interviews and surveys of faculty members and compare this to our experience with new users starting in Vista. We will present our unique multi-faceted training program for Vista as well as a number of the specific support strategies that have been effective in helping transition users. Successful practices and lessons learned will be presented on how universities that are making the transition from CE to Vista can help their faculty members to make it as smooth a transition as possible.
