Abstract Text:This showcase will demonstrate how the University of Florida monitors our WebCT Vista 3 installation. We will detail the technical aspects of system monitoring, in particular how we have configured the nagios monitoring tool to work with Vista. We intend to show how nagios is used to monitor and alert us when potential or real problem conditions arise. We will briefly describe our procedural setup for monitoring, such as the chain of notification from the monitoring tool, to our operations staff, to our on-call duty person. The technical presentation will cover not only basic system monitoring such as disk usage and machine availability, but also more advanced monitoring capabilities, such as checking Oracle tablespace capacity and programatic HTTP logins. We will detail the in-house scheduled monitoring scripts we've written, as well as the nagios tools we use. For nagios, we plan to explain both pre-existing tools and custom components.
