Detailed Description:Now that you have WebCT Campus Edition 6, you can “remodel” your course with Cascading Style Sheets to separate presentation from content, improve accessibility and usability, and enhance student interactivity. In this session, participants will learn about designer possibilities, tools needed for the job, and a blueprint for getting started. Handouts, resource guides, and a CSS designer community guestbook will be available.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Incorporating innovative tools: breakthrough technologies and WebCT
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors, System Administrators
Appropriate Audience Level:Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:Adopting CE6 is a great opportunity to “remodel” your old course using advances from Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for website development. CSS will allow experienced WebCT designers to separate presentation mark-up from content code, making web pages more accessible and Section 508 compliant.

CSS positioning techniques and the display property enable designers to embed JavaScript-like interactivity behaviors into their pages without using or knowing scripting languages. Increased interactivity can translate into improved learning outcomes.

CSS will also save time in making course-wide changes to presentation and/or content, giving designers freedom to update course material more often. This in turn can promote better student-instructor connectedness, keeping course material fresh and interactive for everyone involved in the learning process.

Experienced WebCT designers will get a three-part tour, including designer possibilities, tools needed for the job, and a blueprint for getting started. For the “designer possibilities” and “tools needed” part of the tour, participants will learn why CSS can improve the designing process, how CSS improves Section 508 accessibility, selected basic CSS design concepts, selected CSS positioning techniques, and where to find print and web resources for learning more. Appropriate hand-outs will be available.

For the “blueprint” part of the tour, participants will receive a template and will discuss practical suggestions about designing CSS web pages in the Learning Module feature of CE6. Participants will also receive a template for organizing CSS files and course content in CE6's File Manager.

Throughout the “tour,” participants will be asked to share their knowledge and experiences about designing in CSS and/or CE6.

The “tour” will conclude with a Q&A session and participants will be asked to sign a “guest book” that includes contact information for the purpose of creating a CSS design community.
