M-15: Using WebCT for non-instructional community building
Detailed Description:The same tools that WebCT provides for the online classroom use can be used to bring groups together outside of the classroom. At CBC, we have used WebCT for faculty forums, voting and surveying, student support groups and student body contests and voting. This session will share what has worked and what hasn't.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Empowering educators: Professional development models and methods
Target Audience:Faculty and Other Instructors, E-learning Managers
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:WebCT provides a great set of tools for delivering on-line instruction that can also provide a basis delivering other services to students and staff or faculty.

At CBC we have used WebCT for a variety of support uses with varying levels of success. We have had WebCT class shells for student support groups, clubs and the Faculty Senate. Currently we are implementing an Associated Student Body (ASB) class shell for voting and other uses. (In less than a day after adding the students to the ASB shell, more than 25% of the students with prior WebCT access had visited that site). We are also starting a Library class shell to offer library support on-line and have been discussing doing the same for our Tutor center.

In addition to polling and information distribution, this gives us the opportunity to build community across the campus (real and virtual).

We also see this as a two-way street. By making these services available in WebCT, we have a conduit to the nearly 40% of our student body that is enrolled in a WebCT class either for class support or distance classes. Also, opening these services to the remaining 60% exposes them to the technology and has potential for increasing usage.

This session will report the successes and challenges, as well as future plans. Attendees will be encouraged to share their experiences with non-class uses of WebCT.
