B-15: Supplementing Your Site with Free Online Services: What, Why, and How
Detailed Description:Free online services such as blogs, wikis, and digital media repositories are abound and increase in number every day. What services are out there and what do they have to offer? Why might you choose to use one or more to enhance your WebCT course site? How would you go about doing so? This session will address these questions, as well as the related issues of intellectual property, student privacy, and more.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Enabling learning: Effective instructional practices and student support models
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors, K-12 Educational Staff
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:There is an ever-increasing variety of free online services available on the web. While there are many powerful tools available in WebCT Vista and Campus Edition, in some cases one or more of these free online services can be useful for complementing the online component of the course, and in many cases can be integrated in some fashion into the WebCT course site. In this presentation we will survey a sampling of free online services in the three broad categories of Blogs, Wikis and Digital Media Repositories, discuss when and how they might be used to advantage in a specific instructional context, and demonstrate possible degrees of integration into a WebCT course site. In addition, we will consider the implications for intellectual property and student privacy. All resources will be available online and a handout including contact information and presentation URL will be provided.
