Abstract Text:Teaching and learning experiences in distance education must meet the needs of learners, faculty, administrators, and industry leaders. The demands of these audiences require learning models that allow for relevant, valid, engaging, and efficient design of instruction and outcomes assessment. To meet these goals, a design was conceived to facilitate the introduction of a problem based learning (PBL) model in Capella University online courses. This model was used to introduce user interface changes that organized the instructional goals and activities of the course around central, authentic “problems.” In addition, other instructional elements such as deliverable templates, grading criteria, and unit maps were developed to clarify the course and assignment expectations for learners, as well as faculty. To reflect these changes in the content structure, a new interface (the 2G interface) was designed and implemented.

Members of the Capella University Next Generation Learning team will introduce the background, theory, and guidelines for PBL in an online environment. The team will also present research results from two PBL course re-designs completed in 2005, through Web-based course development examples and quasi-experimental data. Participants will have the opportunity to apply PBL principles and technologies to online courses in different disciplines. Practical tips for implementation will be shared to assist other faculty and institutions in implementing a PBL strategy.
