K-13: Template or Standards? Making the Right Design Choice
Detailed Description: | In today's age of fast food and high-speed Internet, many institutions provide their faculty with a pre-designed template to “make it easier” for them to integrate WebCT into their online or blended courses. This session will highlight the advantages and disadvantages of using such templates and propose a proven, novel, and effective approach to designing courses that supports current research in teaching and learning.
Presentation Format: | Showcase
Topic: | Empowering educators: Professional development models and methods
Target Audience: | Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors, E-learning Managers, K-12 Educational Staff
Appropriate Audience Level: | Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text: | In their attempt to ease the integration of WebCT, keep cost down, or establish “branding” most institutions and organizations choose to use pre-designed or institutionalized templates. This interactive session will challenge some of the preconceived notions that come with such an approach and propose a different perspective. After a brief introduction that will outline current trends and practices in course design, we will highlight the advantages and disadvantages of using a “one-size-fits-all” approach, before proposing a proven, novel, and effective solution to designing a blended or fully online WebCT environment, one that is driven by standards rather than cookie-cutter directives. We will then outline the recommended process and guide the participants though its main stages. Each stage will be defined, outlined, illustrated, and referenced, enabling the participants to leave the session with rational, model, guidance, and resources that will foster their transition from template to standardization. We will illustrate the various issues addressed with examples drawn from existing RPI WebCT courses.
