Abstract Text:This session will describe how WebCT can be used to serve a university-based pharmacy residency. The speakers will discuss the need for flexibility in the management and education of residents who are likely to work at a number of venues, with a variety of professionals, and at odd hours during the days and evenings.

The general aim of the pharmacy residency is to provide an optimal environment for the resident to grow professionally and personally, to develop as a competent primary care practitioner, an effective teacher, and a productive writer and researcher. The university, in tandem with surrounding healthcare institutions and organizations, is charged with providing an environment rich with resources, role models, encouragement and guidance.

One of the key challenges with the pharmacy residency--and with healthcare residencies in general--is effectively coordinating and staying abreast of a resident's experiences. What WebCT affords the resident is a secure, flexible means of acquiring information (medical literature, schedules, seminars) and reporting experience (meetings with patients, colleagues, students). And, what it affords institutions and organizations in charge of the residency is a means by which to document and assess the quality and efficacy of the residency.
