I-11: The E-Learning Imperative: Does Strategy Matter?
Detailed Description:This session will question the validity of traditional approaches to strategy development in UK Higher Education institutions. We will address whether the existence of an e-learning strategy is a help or a hindrance for e-learning implementation and whether existing strategies can evolve to respond to the ‘e-learning imperative.’ Come learn how strategic developments within City University have impacted the implementation of WebCT Vista and hear about a new ‘manifesto’ for future strategy development.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Deploying enterprise e-learning: Strategies for success
Target Audience:Faculty and Other Instructors, Senior Administrators, E-learning Managers
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:Implementing an institution-wide e-learning system demands not only a successful programme of change management but also a rethink in strategic approach. The introduction of a new managed learning environment can often be seen as a ‘Trojan horse', throwing into relief outdated or outmoded processes and practices. One of the major areas of practice which suddenly becomes more open to scrutiny is that of strategy development. Traditionally, institutions have developed strategies to deal with particularly areas of business – learning and teaching; research; information services and estates to name but a few. However, e-learning developments cannot be easily categorised into belonging in just one of these areas. E-learning is often an umbrella term and actually encompasses such areas of activity as e-pedagogy; e-research and e-administration. In order to truly implement an e-learning system and embed e-learning into day-to-day practices a more holistic approach to strategy is needed and one which looks beyond traditional categories of activity or focus. Whether or not to actually write an e-learning strategy is often a contentious point – does a strategy really mean that an institution has fully embraced the potentials of e-learning or is it merely an indicator that the strategy ‘checkbox' for e-learning has been ticked?
