Abstract Text:There is a proliferation of online courses in higher education institutions. What are the best practices identified for online courses and how are best practices disseminated to faculty? The University of Central Florida (UCF) addresses these issues with their award-winning, faculty development course, IDL6543. IDL6543 is a faculty development course used to teach and model best practices. IDL6543 is a blended course where faculty attend classroom sessions once a week. Between these sessions, faculty interact with online content and communicate asynchronously. IDL6543 relies on the computer-mediated communication (CMC) teaching strategies where participants become part of a learning community of faculty scholars. In addition, they have an opportunity to interact with veteran faculty members and see authentic (in-use) examples of best practices. Based on literature and research, the best practices used in IDL6543 prepare new online faculty to effectively develop and deliver their course(s) with phenomenal success. This presentation will highlight the best practices used to deliver IDL6543 and examples of best practices used in faculty courses. Research data will be presented highlighting UCF's online success story. The audience will leave with a better understanding of instructional best practices and how to use them strategically in an online setting. The session will be open to discussion and audience participation will be encouraged. Handouts and web pages will be disseminated.
