Abstract Text:Deakin University, Australia, is a large multi-campus institution with a strong history in distance education. In 2003 Deakin implemented WebCT Vista as its corporate teaching and learning system. The past three years have seen a rapid evolution in the uses of online teaching and learning by faculty.

A primary professional development objective has been to move faculty from using a basic approach to delivering their courses online to making more effective use of the online media available. The challenge is both technical and cultural, with teaching staff being required to change their way of interacting with students.

In 2005, Deakin developed a 'Contemporary Online Teaching Cases' website (http://www.deakin.edu.au/itl/teach-learn/cases/index.htm), including over 60 examples of online teaching and learning practice at Deakin. We used adult learning principles, storytelling techniques and situated learning to motivate and inspire faculty to explore and investigate possibilities for developing their online teaching practice.

The case studies have become a key resource in a broader professional development program. In this paper, we will demonstrate some of the cases that have been developed to support this approach, and discuss how these are being used to support a range of professional development initiatives.
