C-11: Template for the Design and Development of Online Courses
Detailed Description:When faced with the challenge of teaching online, faculty often struggle with the process of how to translate their course content to the online learning environment. While there is no one-size-fits all formula for developing an online course, there are common components, criteria, and guidelines that faculty can adapt to their teaching styles and learners' needs. In this interactive session, presenters demonstrate a comprehensive template for developing online courses to meet accreditation requirements for learning effectiveness.
Presentation Format:Showcase
Topic:Empowering educators: Professional development models and methods
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:Accompanying the rapid increase in the number of online courses being offered is the need for leadership strategies to guide faculty from the course approval process through the development and delivery of online courses. A comprehensive template for developing online courses to meet accreditation requirements for learning effectiveness will be shared and discussed. The presentation will include a demonstration of a web-based curriculum management system that facilitates online course development and ensures compliance with state regulations.

The presentation will demonstrate a comprehensive template for developing online courses to meet accreditation requirements for learning effectiveness that includes:

Module matrix with required components, criteria, and guidelines. Syllabus as a roadmap with required components and guidelines. General guidelines for materials formatting Recommended course development guidelines Checklist of course readiness.

Illustrated guides that show how to develop the module matrix will be distributed. The matrix addresses successful online course development.

Having worked with over 200 faculty across disciplines to develop their online courses, this systematic approach to guiding the course development process has many benefits to the faculty and students as well as to the educational institution. The roles and responsibilities of the instructor, the course development team, and the student support services departments are clarified. The educational institution has the assurance that each online course meets the quality and rigor to achieve educational effectiveness goals.

This will be an interactive session with the sharing of best practices for online course development by the session attendees. The goals are to inform the audience of leadership strategies that are based on practical, proven, successful techniques for developing online courses.
