Presentation Format:Roundtable
Topic:Enabling learning: Effective instructional practices and student support models
Target Audience:Course Designers, Faculty and Other Instructors, System Administrators, E-learning Managers
Appropriate Audience Level:Beginning or new users of WebCT, Experienced WebCT users
Abstract Text:Given substantial growth in demand for course management services, and the reality of scarce resources, use of students to support faculty and student usage of WebCT is almost inevitable. This presentation will discuss challenges and potential uses for students engaged in supporting WebCT, including after hours support, handling heavy load cycles, muddling through staff transitions, managing version upgrades, and preparing quick guides and learning materials.

Reporting on experiences of a large public institution that hosts over 15,000 student seats per semester in WebCT, the presentation discusses challenges that range from tight budgets to training schedules to student professionalism to diffusion of responsibility. Since instructional resources are often separated from student technology resources, issues of cross-unit coordination are also addressed.

Objectives of the session: identify strategies guiding mixing of staff and student WebCT support, report on “lessons learned” in managing WebCT student support, and explore solutions implemented to overcome some of the emerging support challenges.

Attendees will receive a packet of forms, policies, and procedures, and will have an opportunity to discuss and share strategies across different institutions that will be compiled into an online resource.
