Abstract Text:This presentation will showcase the “Start Here” Orientation Module, which was created and implemented for WebCT Vista at Santa Barbara City College. Since its inception, the “Start Here” module has been a highly successful tool that has significantly reduced student frustration; drop rates, and requests for technical support. The Module was created by the Santa Barbara City College Helpdesk, and specifically addresses many of the common technical issues and other various questions that students have each semester.

The session will be for the learning track “Enabling learning: Effective instructional practices and student support models”. The session objectives are to demonstrate the basics of the “Start Here” module and emphasize the reasons why student orientations are incredibly important, as well as highlight the key concepts needed to create an orientation that will increase student success.

The intended session outcomes are to share an effective practice with other WebCT Vista users and to successfully identify the key components necessary for creating an effective orientation.

We will use a PowerPoint presentation, and encourage participant discussion of student support issues, the value of orientations, and the basic components of a successful orientation. We'll conclude with a presentation of the “Start Here” module and a Q&A with prizes for correct answers! Additionally, we'll hand out notes on the entire presentation as well as reference and contact information.
