K-2: Beyond TechPrep: Preparing Students to Transition from On-ground to Online
Detailed Description:As students move from the physical to the online classroom, they need not only to learn new technical skills but also how to successfully transition into a learning environment where they actively manage their own learning process. Failure to accomplish this transition often results in poor academic performance and failure to complete courses. This presentation will share a multi-tiered strategy used at Governors State University to help students move successfully from on-ground to online classes.

Abstract Text:As students move from the physical to the online classroom, they need not only to learn new technical skills but also how to successfully transition into a learning environment where they actively manage their own learning process. Failure to accomplish this transition often results in poor academic performance and failure to complete courses. Governors State University addresses this problem by providing a Student Support structure that not only explores technical preparation through tutorials, but also encourages students to think about the differences between on-ground and online course learning.

“Beyond TechPrep” explores the problem of student expectations versus the question of online course success, and presents methods and strategies for helping students “rethink” learning styles and approaches to online participation. This session will take you on a tour of GSU's Student Support system, show how Student Support is incorporated into the University's Standard Course Template, and discuss students' response to the strategy. Participants will have an opportunity to link to the site and explore GSU's tutorials and Pre-Course, and participate in a post-session exchange of ideas.
